The Wrong Girl (Freak House #1) by C.J. Archer

Book Blurb:

It’s customary for Gothic romance novels to include a mysterious girl locked in the attic. Hannah Smith just wishes she wasn’t that girl. As a narcoleptic and the companion to an earl’s daughter with a strange affliction of her own, Hannah knows she’s lucky to have a roof over her head and food in her belly when so many orphans starve on the streets. Taken by handsome Jack Langley to a place known as Freak House, she finds herself under the same roof as a mad scientist, his niece, a mute servant and Jack, a fire starter with a mysterious past. They assure Hannah she is not a prisoner and that they want to help her. The problem is, they think she’s the earl’s daughter. What will they do when they discover they took the wrong girl?

Sometimes life takes things away from you.

In nineteen-year-old Maggie Carson’s case, it’s taken more than its fair share.

Determined to move forward, Maggie embarks on her first year of college, hoping to finally put her past behind her, exactly where it belongs.

But that’s hard to do when the present is just as difficult. And even harder when someone like Ran, the gorgeous paramedic that keeps crossing Maggie’s path, challenges her to face things head on, rather than bury them like she always does.

Ran hasn’t had a perfect life either. But there’s something different about him, and something different about the way he makes Maggie feel. Maybe meeting Ran is life’s little gift for Maggie—a sort of consolation prize for enduring everything she’s had to go through.

But things don’t come easy for Maggie. Why should love be the exception? And just when everything starts to settle, it’s all turned on its head once again.

If there is one thing Ran has taught Maggie, it’s that you can’t sit on the sidelines of your own existence. When life takes something that’s yours, you have every right to demand it back.

Only for Maggie, that is easier said than done.

10 Things I Didn’t Know About Being an Author

1. I didn’t know how awesome it would be to see someone reading my book in public. I was dropping my daughter off at the dance studio a few weeks ago and one of the teenage girls that takes lessons there had my book open and was reading it in the hallway. Best. Feeling. Ever.

2. There is an amazing community of Indie Authors out there. I honestly had no idea what a solid, strong group of self-published authors it was until I became a part of it. It’s a camaraderie like no other.

3. I didn’t know sleeping was a thing of the past. Apparently my characters and I are in different time zones because they always seem to be wide-awake and chatty when I should be heading to bed.

4. I didn’t know a five star review could make me dance the jig. Because it has. On multiple occasions.

5. I didn’t know it was possible to want to strangle a fictional character… that I created. I’ve actually wanted to do this to several of my characters. I don’t understand why they just don’t behave!

6. I also had no clue I could fall in love with a fictional character… that I created. Ran. Wow. If he rescued me in his ambulance, I might actually start wishing for an emergency.

7. I didn’t know I was Survivor material. I’m pretty certain I could do well on that show given that I can go long stretches of time without sleep, food, and water, all for the sake of finishing “just one more chapter.”

8. I didn’t know I could feel so much. Writing can be both incredible and gut-wrenching. When your characters experience something, you experience it right along with them. It’s taxing and exhausting, but such an amazing thing to be a part of, to experience so much more of life than just your own.

9. Being a writer is more than just being a writer. Much of what I do involves very little actual writing. By self-publishing, you become the author, publicist, assistant, editor, reviewer, reviser, promoter… you get the picture. The ball is in your court to do anything and everything to get your book out there. Marketing often becomes the focus over writing, and that can get really challenging at times because all I want to do is get my pen to paper. But I also want others to have the chance to read what I put out, so marketing is crucial.

10. It’s a 24/7 thing. Being an author isn’t just a job title. It’s who you are. I’m constantly at work, even when I’m not. In my head, in my sleep. My mind is always working, always creating. And I love every minute of it!

Canyon (The Westmorelands #26) by Brenda Jackson

Book Blurb:

From New York Times bestselling author Brenda Jackson comes a new trilogy starring three Westmorelands… Years ago, Canyon Westmoreland let misunderstandings come between him and Keisha Ashford. But when Keisha returns to town with a two-year-old son, it’s time to settle things once and for all. A blazing attraction still burns between them, and this time around, nothing will stop Canyon from claiming what is his-his woman and his child!

Another great success in the unique and characteristic style of Brenda Jackson, Canyon is a thrilling and wonderful story with another original and amazing character of the Westmoreland clan that treats the most simple and universal theme in the everyday life: love with all its ups and downs. Whether it’s about finding love and losing it, or finding love and looking for ways on keeping it, Brenda Jackson’s stories are well written, uncomplicated, sizzling and an amazing addition to any love story fan. The love and loyalty this family proves for one another makes this one of the most heart-warming and captivating series I’ve read about.

Canyon is no exception to Jackson’s successful series. Love, loyalty, family, secrets and deceptions are only a few elements that can be found in this book. What could have been a big celebration ended up into a terrible sufferance, when Keisha Ashford walks into her bedroom to find her naked best friend sprawled in her bed and Canyon, the love of her life, also naked, with just one towel to cover his delectable body, coming out of the bathroom. Hurt and heartbroken, she flees town leaving behind an angry and confused Canyon. He knows he didn’t cheat on her, yes, things look pretty bad, but he can’t reach her to explain or exculpate himself for the events that took place earlier and he can’t understand why she would choose to believe a lie instead of trusting him and his love for her. Fast forward three years and they have had no interaction. Now she’s back in town and she has a big secret. A secret she tried to hide from him, a secret that once discovered angers him more than her betrayal. He has a son he never knew about because she chose not to tell him.  But now that he knows, Canyon will do anything to be with his son. Of course, Keisha will be a complication, because she hates his guts for what she believes he has done to her. His feelings for her start resurfacing and he doesn’t have any proof of his innocence about what occurred three years ago. On top of this, someone is stalking Keisha. Her house is trashed and Canyon must protect her and his son until the police solve the case. Being so close and spending time together, they realize they still have feelings for one another and the passion they radiate will hit with the force of a tornado. The hot and hard lovemaking is mind boggling and you want to read more, more, more!

Every secret will be revealed and the mystery will be solved and once again the magical touch of Westmoreland will show. But even if the truth is revealed, will Canyon and Keisha be able to let go of past guilt and regrets, and forgive in order to build a future together and form a real family?

A wonderful and sensual read in the Westmorlands series.

This is one of those books that will have people divided over it because of its heroine and the way the story ended. I’m not say how the book ends but for some it may seem ‘What the hell just happened?’ But that being said, it does fit in considering what the heroine and hero are like together and apart because one has it together and the other is train wreck. And it’s not who you expect who is the train wreck!

Emily is a junior in college and appears to have everything she wants. She has a wonderful boyfriend, Cooper, who is a senior and has an amazing job offer once he graduates. It’s only a matter of time before they get engaged. They only have one problem: Cooper’s drug habit that he has courtesy of the friend who supplies with him it, Jason. Emily hates it and has told him numerous times that she wants him stop and not hang with Jason but Cooper never listens. So it’s the last straw when she goes to a party and sees Cooper coming out a bedroom with a beautiful brunette after being warned by her brother Chris not to go in the house. Chris is Cooper’s best friend and has always looked out for her because Cooper is like his brother and Emily has always been more like a best friend. He knows about Cooper’s drug use.

Emily is mad as she rushes home and Cooper follows her—and I won’t give it away but this is an awful night in question. She gives him one last chance as he promises her that he won’t ever do it again. A few days later, Emily discovers that she’s pregnant and comes home to find Cooper and Jason with two girls all doing drugs.

It’s the last straw for her and she flees to her best friend Jen’s apartment. She tries to move on but how she when everyone is going to be talking and divided on the issue. She knows that she still loves Cooper and at first she aims to only focus on the baby. However, then Ben, a guy she knows from one of her classes asks her out on a date. At first she makes it clear that she only wants to be friends but she’s a veritable train wreck emotionally, all over the place, and she decides maybe she wants to be more than that. Ben can be her rebound guy but she doesn’t tell him so and hopes that by the time she is heavily pregnant he will dump her. This is the ‘what the hell?’ bit because she’s still loving Cooper and thinking of their special moments etc.

Factor in Cooper to this mix now. He seems to have turned over a new leaf and wants to be there for Emily even though she’s clear that she doesn’t want him and you have a story that you either love or hate by the end. The way it’s written looking from Emily’s perspective makes the situation plausible and that why I liked it and was willing to give it such a high rating because honestly the book is mainly about the young adults. The focus is on young adults, and older folk don’t feature into this story or show much influence. Trying to Get Over You is realistic and shows how not everything can be alright when you experience a life altering event. I think we’ve been given too much of a fairytale spin on this kind of story and it’s nice to see content that hits closer to the truth and real life. 4 couples.

Kalindra (GateKeepers #2) by Sondrae Bennett

What happens when a warrior woman meets her match?

Harpy Kalindra stumbles upon three human corpses who’ve mysteriously crossed from Earth into Outremer through the portal she guards. A human prisoner with two traveling vampires seems her only clue. She captures the man, and brings him back to her lair to discover the truth–not only why he came to Outremer, but how he got past the defenses of the gate. She expects answers. What she doesn’t expect is the intense attraction she feels for him…attraction he seems to share.

Cameron has a secret. For years, he’s used a shard of the gateway to cross worlds without detection–for his own gain. When the gatekeeper saves him from the clutches of vampires who want the shard, he learns she’s not just another monster from Outremer. He can’t resist his attraction to her human form, and before long he’s feeling more than simple lust for her.

Kalindra’s gateway comes under constant attack from creatures who want what Cameron has. The assaults are his fault, but he can’t hand over the shard, which is a family legacy. He must convince Kalindra he can help defend the gate…but how?

Dolce Amore

Review :

This is the second book of Gatekeepers series and I have to say that after I read and reviewed the first book of the series, Koishi by Annie Nicholas, (you can find the review here: I knew this book had to be wonderful … and it is. Although the books are part of a series, they can be read as stand-alone.

Harpy Kalindra is a gatekeeper; she guards one of the four gateways between worlds. When she comes back to her gate after visiting her best friend Analise, she is shocked to see dead humans in front of it—but on the Outremer side. She would have been called by the gate if humans had come through it, right?

Confused, she tries to discover what happened when she finds two vampires with a prisoner, a human. She kills them after discovering that the human had something they wanted and there will be more vampires coming after him now they know his secret. So Kali does the only thing she thinks she can … she takes him with her.

“Until I get some answers, you’re coming with me.”

“Wha…” he started as she took off into the air, only to stop when she grabbed his shoulders in her talons. “No, wait.”

“Relax.” She sighed. “I won’t kill you until I get answers.”

Although supposedly her prisoner, the human Cameron is treated more like a guest.

Had led him to a room with a huge four poster bed piled high with pillows and blankets–he hadn’t known a bed could fit that many pillows. She’d even allowed him to shower with soap and actual shampoo. He was definitely not going to ask where the woman found Herbal Essences this far away from civilization.

Besides that, he was free to explore Kali’s home. And her meals were excellent.

After seeing Kali in her human form, Cameron starts to see that not all the monsters from Outremer are actually monsters and while the attraction between them gets hotter, he has to decide if he trusts her enough to give her the shard he is guarding. But before he can make up his mind, there is an attack at the gate and the attackers tell her they just want the human. So Kali makes Cameron tell her what he is hiding and tells him she will train him so he can be safe.

“I’ll train you. Teach you about the different creatures. Teach you our weaknesses. Where to strike, and how hard. If, and only if, I’m satisfied that you can do what needs to be done, I’ll let you go.” No need to tell him she doubted she’d ever be satisfied. No human could take on the creatures from her world single-handed. But she’d give him a fair shot.

Soon the attraction turns into love on both sides and Cameron makes Kali understand that he has to fight at her side to make sure she is safe and because he is so good at fighting after she trained him, she accepts.

When Cameron is killed during one of the attacks, Kali is heartbroken. Devastated, she blames the gate for Cameron’s death. But then a Valkyrie appears and Kali hopes she can turn Cameron into an immortal Einherjar, a race of warriors who live at Valhalla and fight for the Valkyries’ cause. When the Valkyrie tells her that if she lets her be the guardian of the gate she can do it, Kali loses her last hope … the only way to stop being a gatekeeper is to die, right? But maybe it isn’t …

I loved the story … a person can redeem him/herself, and that is what Cameron does. He brought those humans to show them Outremer and they were killed. But he was willing to redeem himself for his error.

And Kali starts to think she is going crazy because of the loneliness of being a gatekeeper for so many years, but meeting Cameron changes everything as he brings love in her life and real happiness.

Never Say Never (The Price of Fame #2) by Aimée Duffy

When pretend turns to desire, heartbreak is unavoidable.

Sander Chase needs a date for his ex-fiancée’s engagement party, but he doesn’t have time for a woman in his life. Between working on the TV show Do You Have What It Takes? and his band reforming, he’s too busy for a relationship. What he needs is a pretend girlfriend. He thinks he may have found the perfect woman for the job, and the bribe he offers means she’s sure to accept.

After losing her job in the film industry, breaking up with her movie star boyfriend, and finding out her mum has dementia, Chloe Butler returned to the UK determined to put her life back together. The last thing she needs is to parade around London on the arm of a celebrity, and after the heartbreak caused by her ex, she swore she’d never again date a star. But when Sander offers her a chance at her dream job, it’s not something she can turn down.

As Chloe gets to know Sander she learns he’s nothing like her scumbag ex. But she struggles to fight her attraction to him, knowing their relationship is only for show and their separation date is closing in fast.

Ignoring the insane chemistry between them should be easy for Sander, especially since he carries a secret that means there can be no future for them, but the more time he spends with Chloe, the harder it is to keep his hands to himself.

Content Warning: contains more denial than you’ll find in a courtroom, more sexual tension than most people could handle, and explosive sex that some readers may find long overdue

Review :

Sander Chase is an ex-boy band member (I always wanted to write a review with the words ‘boy band’ in it!) whose group is now reforming. He originally left the group because the lead singer was having an affair with Sander’s then fiancée. They’re now about to get married and guess who’s invited to their engagement party? None other than Sander, of course! Except Sander doesn’t have a girlfriend to take with him to the party. Enter Chloe Butler. When Sander sees her at the coffee shop where she works, he thinks that Chloe would make the PERFECT “pretend” date for him to take to this party. So he makes Chloe an offer that she can’t refuse. Yup, I could DEFINETELY see where this was going!

It was funny (and beyond sexy) watching these 2 “pretend” they didn’t have feelings for each other, when they clearly start to develop them. I am a huge fan of sexual tension and this story had it in droves … and all I can say is that when Sander and Chloe FINALLY give in to their feelings, the result is a HUGE, SEXY BOOM!

While I found it hard to connect with Chloe, something about her felt off for me, I just can’t put my finger on what it was, I really liked Sander, he was SERIOUSLY HOT (and did I mention that I have a thing for guys in boy bands?!) and truly swoon worthy material! Ultimately though, these two together made a really sweet couple and while I knew they were going to get their happy ever after, it was enjoyable going on the journey to see how they got there. I would definitely recommend this book, if you like your contemporary romance light, sweet and sexy and rate it 3 stars.

Review :

Jacqueline’s life has gone to hell and she wants it to be over. The once perfect happy girl is falling apart as things go to pieces in her personal life. He perfect boyfriend breaks up with her unexpectedly just weeks into college saying he wants to be free to experiment as they are still young. Despite this, Jacqueline follows him to the same school instead of going to Music College where she had been accepted. Her friends ditch her because of it and other behaviour. Add to this, someone is stalking her and she is failing economics, something that is a foreign concept to her. Her professor is concerned and suggests she needs a tutor and she agrees as she desperately doesn’t want to fail and ruin her perfect record.

He gives her the Landon’s email, the class tutor, who is initially rude and makes her work hard. She realizes not all is lost and she can claw her way back. She realizes through him that she is still the same intelligent girl she was and soon Jacqueline is intrigued and interested in this witty guy whose responses are making her life easier. She finds herself not regretting the decision to attend the university instead of Music College. Only problem is that she and Landon are only  corresponding through email as he supposedly does not have the time to meet in person.

At the same time, a guy in her economics class has captured her interest, after saving her the first night she meets him. Lucas is nothing like her ex or her tutor. He just sits there in class, drawing in his notebook and when he’s not, he stares at her, and despite her interest in Landon, Jacqueline is drawn to him. Landon takes a back step as Lucas invades her life. Lucas starts to appear everywhere and the two form a close relationship as Lucas helps her with the stalker issue.

However, a shocking connection reveals itself between Landon and Lucas, and things start to spiral out of control. Her ex decides that he wants back in her life, the stalker decides to ratchet things up a notch and suddenly what was insignificant becomes important again and things that were once easy become hard. All Jacqueline wants is an easy life and she is on the verge of achieving it but with everything falling apart once again will she be able to have a happy ending?

Easy is one of those books that you need to read for yourself, there’s so much more to the story and I don’t want to give everything away. You need to read this for yourself. The hero is hot, Lucas is everything that Jacqueline isn’t looking for. He has tattoos and a lip piercing, everything that Jacqueline would not look for, she thinks she wants a good boy not a bad boy who has a history.

But you can’t control who you fall in love with and Lucas is there for her when everything went downhill the first time and he’s built her back up slowly as their relationship progresses. Every letter, text and conversation between them feels like it happened for a reason and you want to savour every moment. I put off writing this review for nearly 3 months because I was in book hangover because I want to savour this book boyfriend. LOL. I need to find my own Lucas! Sigh.

Okay, back to the book.. The author handles a topic that is sensitive, with dignity by keeping it lighthearted but providing the right depth and emotions from the characters.  You can’t help but fall in love with Lucas and *sigh* Jacqueline. 5 couples

Review :

A Matter of Heart is the second book in the Fate series and is a story that probably you want to read if you want to run the full gamut of emotions because the author knows how to toy with them, something not many writers can do. The fact that this is a fantasy  book is a plus for me because in the category of NA there is hardly any fantasy stories yet on my radar that are worth reading. The sequel to the A Matter of Fate follows with the tale of Chloe, Jonah, Kellan and a range of other characters in the alternative earth that is separated by planes of existence, each different from the next.

The series follow Chloe who is a Creator, a human who has rare magical skills. She can create literally anything, and currently there are only two in existence like her and she has become revered by many people and seen as a threat by others. For me, she honestly is a brat, but she gets a kick in her butt from the least expected source and realises how good things are for her.

Time has passed since we last saw Chloe, she is now living in Annar, the magical plane for all magical beings after finishing high school. Now that she’s eighteen, she has her own separate life, she’s happily engaged to Jonah, she’s on the council that governs all the planes and beginning to be allowed to use her skills which she has been waiting in anticipation of since she is only doing one subject at the university. When her life comes tumbling apart as things start to change not only personally but in the council and the world around her, she makes decisions and friendships that may come at a dire price.

Kellan, her former love interest, has returned and the guy is keeping it together in order to have everything smooth and even. Emotional like his twin brother Jonah, he is Chloe other half as well because  the brothers are identical which means there is a love triangle happening. You have to feel sorry for him; the poor guy tries to do everything right but he doesn’t come up smelling like roses because of the choices he makes to help his loved ones. Then there is Jonah, the passive guy who is on the council; you want him in your court if you ever are in trouble as he tries to make everything good for his love Chloe and keep her safe.

Chloe is completely blind to this and needs to grow up fast and who better than Callie, yes Callie, the one you wanted to hate who wrecked things between the Chloe and Jonah in the previous book? Well you haven’t seen everything yet and Callie surprisingly takes a different turn in this book.

As the author takes you on another spin in this continuing series that will leaving you wanting the next book because of its cliff hanger ending, you can’t help fall in love with this world Heather Lyons has created. After reading this book, I totally understand why people are in love with this series.

5 couples and honestly I have written the review this way because you NEED to read this book for yourself and I don’t want to give this the whole story away.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Emma Hart, comes the second book in The Game series, and the story everyone wanted after The Love Game…

She’s in love with him.
He’s trying not to love her.
One night changes everything.

Aston Banks never meant to get close to Megan Harper – not even for that one night. Haunted by a childhood he refuses to face, he knew she could break through every wall he’d ever built and tear them down without even realising she was doing it.

Betraying Braden by starting a relationship with Aston wasn’t on Megan’s to-do list, but the second she sees a glimpse of someone other than the arrogant ass she’s come to know, she can’t walk away.

Aston’s childhood is worse than Megan ever guessed, but as he tries and fails to push her away, it’s clear her love is stronger than the demons that cling to him every day. And now, because of it, he finally has to deal with what he’s buried deep down.

What he doesn’t want to face. What he’s fought against for so long.

And they have to do it all without Braden finding out.

Keeping a relationship secret has never been harder.

**This book can be read as a standalone novel, but reading The Love Game (The Game, #1) beforehand is advised.**

“You okay?”

I shake my head. “No. Every time. Every fucking time he brings her up. I thought he wouldn’t in front of you, but he did.”

“He has his own pain,” she says softly. “It doesn’t excuse it, but he does. He feels guilty for what happened to you – that he couldn’t stop it.”

My mind reels for a second and I look down at her. “He told you that?”

She nods, letting her hand drop from my back and standing in front of me. I stop.

“You’ve never let him tell you.” She reaches up and cups my face. “He hurts, too, Aston. You both hurt. It’s not something that will go away, but you can’t let it rule your lives. If you let pain rule you you’ll get lost in it.”

“What if I’m already lost?”

“You’re not lost. You’re hiding, but you’re not lost. I won’t let you get lost.”

I let my hands come up and rest on her back, pulling her into me. “What if there’s no map?”

“Then I’ll get lost with you,” she whispers. “I won’t let you let them win, Aston. I won’t let you get sucked in by those demons. I won’t let that happen. I care too much.”

And she does. I can hear it in her voice.

She wraps her arms around my neck, and I hold her to me tighter, our foreheads resting against each other.

“I’ll try, Megs,” I promise. “I can’t say I won’t, but as long as you’re here, I think I’ll be okay.”

“And you’ll talk to your Gramps? Just once?”

“I’ll think about it. How about we just focus on stopping me from getting lost for a bit?”

“You just need a place to aim for, that’s all. You need a place to go to.”

“Go on then.” I smile. “Give me a place.”

“Okay.” She pauses for a second, closing her eyes and chewing her lip.

“I’m waiting…” I tease her.

Her blue eyes open, shocking me with their vitality. “Aim for the moon, because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

“I don’t need to aim for the sky. The only star I’ll ever need is standing right in front of me.” I brush my lips over hers. “Maybe the place I need to aim for is nowhere other than where I am right now.”

“Maybe I’d go with you wherever you ended up.”

“Maybe I’d never ask that of you.”

“Maybe you wouldn’t need to ask. Maybe you’ll never need to ask me for anything, because I’ll always be here.”
