synopsis

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.

In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstöm has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.

But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

review

“Let rage be your guide”

My first thought when I heard about this book was: “YES! She’s continuing with the Gathering series. I was wrong. It’s a brand new one with new characters and new adventures. Which works for me too, I love everything by Miss Laurenston.

Kera Watson, a former marine, works at a coffee shop while she awaits her opportunity to go back to active duty. Unfortunately she never gets that chance….she dies.

If it weren’t for her favorite customer, she would have been a goner. Vig Rundstöm, whose not really human, prays to his Norse Gods, Skuld in particular, to safe Kera’s soul. Upon the prayer Skuld appears and gives Kera two choices, to really die or come back to life as a Crow.

Her choice speaks for itself, she has one little condition though. Her pitbull, Brodie Hawaii, gets to come with her. The next time she awakes, a new life awaits together with a few challenges.

I love this book so much, it’s been a while since it has been released but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve reread it since. I just reread it again because the second book will release tomorrow!

Kera and Vig are the main characters in this one, while there is a main storyline throughout the series, each book will put another couple in the spotlight.

Throughout the book you’re reading how Kera is adjusting to her life as a Crow. Much is different now and where she breathes order and discipline, her fellow warriors abhor it. Can you imagine the turmoil?

While the adjusting takes place you’re also being introduced to an afterlife world that is divided in clans. Each clan represents a Norse God and has their own strengths and…quirks. They all seem to have issues with one another, but especially with the Crows. They’re pretty much the black sheep of the bunch.

Kera thankfully doesn’t stand alone. She has her handsome savior helping her. Who is more than happy to help. It means he gets to spend time with her, and the more time he spends with her the more she will be “thralled” by him….it’s viking logic, really.

Vig is known to be a ruthless viking, seeing him with and around Kera has me thinking otherwise. Just read the following bit, he’s just too adorable.

“She hugged me when she saw me and said ‘thank you’.”
“Hugging! She patted his T-shirt-covered back.”
“That’s good!”
“A hug that said ‘thank you for saving my life’. Not a hug of ‘I want your winged babies’”
“Awww, sweetie.”

Did that make you laugh? Good, because the book is full of moments like this that will make you laugh out loud. Keep that in mind when you’re going to be reading it in public.

Reading about these characters almost makes me want to be a crow. All tough around the edges and mean as hell on the inside. Being known for your rage, okay that’s not so good. But the loyalty to no one but each other? Big thumbs up. Plus the crows are like 200% crazy. I’d fit in perfectly.

This is without doubt a five star read for me. My five stars mean, I loved it, I will reread it over and over again and…the author is now stuck with me forever. I’ll now be waiting impatiently for every book she will write 😉

synopsis

A senior in high school, introvert Aislinn Munroe is satisfied living unnoticed…

Aislinn is doing the normal post-high school preparations to get into college. She’s getting ready for a life beyond senior year, and wonders where she’ll fit in to the world once she’s officially an adult. Though her curves are to kill for, she’s also smart and funny. However, she isn’t at all popular, which is just fine with her.

Aislinn’s introverted ways are about to be put to the test…

Content with hiding from the limelight, Aislinn doesn’t get bullied like so many other shy kids do—that is, as long as she keeps to herself. But is she really living the life she’s meant to? Or are there unforeseen adventures waiting to shake up her life in the near future?

When her brother comes home from college, he brings an unexpected houseguest…

Teagan Aldridge is a reformed party animal, ladies’ man, and bad boy. He’s the last person Aislinn thought would ever show her attention. But when Aislinn and Teagan become unlikely friends, he brings out a side of herself she never knew existed. She already knows she’s special, but sexy and adventurous? That’s a first.

Are their personalities too far apart, or will opposites attract, making them an unusual, but influential pair? When their vast differences collide, Aislinn is led to some unexpected.

review

The combination of the synopsis and that cute cover convinced me to give this book a shot. And I’m so happy I did!

Aislinn is a bit of shy girl, content being on her own, not going out much, not dating…She does have a crush on someone, has had it for quite some time. But according to her the boy is too far out of her reach. Besides her crush is dating miss super bitch, who is already set on making her school life hell. No need to give her more motivation.

When her brother, Connor, comes home from college he brings with him a buddy of his. One look at the stranger and Aislinn’s jaw drops open. The following weeks will prove to be quite interesting.

In this book Aislinn makes many changes, they don’t happen all at once or out of nowhere. There’s a slow build up to them, which I really appreciate. As I mentioned before there’s a miss bitch who’s nothing short of a bully. It was hard to read that Aislinn could stick up for others but when the bullying centered on her she would rather walk away, and many times that is exactly what she did. Luckily she has a best friend who has her back.

Connor’s buddy, Teagan, isn’t at all what I had expected. Despite his reputation as a player he is really good for Aislinn. His presence in the Munroe house brings many excitements, one is in the form of a ginormous dog. Overall Teagan is kind and respectful, he’s a bit quiet as well which makes it kind of difficult to read him at times. That’s all part of the allure I guess.

Too bad Connor doesn’t have any of those qualities. This guy can be a real pain in the butt. As he’s a brother I’ll give him a pass on many inconsiderate moments. But even that has a limit. My opinion of him goes up and down throughout the story and in the end I’m all kinds of twisted in them. I can only imagine how Connor himself must be feeling.

Despite all of the heavy stuff I really love this story, it’s cute and funny. It portrays brother sister relationships perfectly as well as how fragile a first relationship can be. All combined I would say Pivotal Moments is a prefect summer read. At least, that’s the vibe I got while reading.

I’m going to rate this read 4,5 couples. Yes, this read made Trinity Hanrahan a new favorite author of mine and I can’t wait to read the other installments in this series. Please tell me we won’t have to wait long for them.

Review: Emma and the Banderwigh by Matthew S. Cox

Title: Emma and the Banderwigh
Author: Matthew S. Cox
Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press
Genre: Romantic suspense
Release Date: October 11, 2015

synopsis

Ten-year-old Emma doesn’t believe in faerie tales or monsters that secret children away in the night–until she meets one.

She lives in a quiet village at the edge of Widowswood with her parents, her Nan, and her little brother, Tam. Ready to abandon the whimsy of childhood, she finds the boredom of chores comforting and Nan’s fanciful bedtime stories silly.

One morning, a wan and weary older girl staggers out of the woods and sets the entire town aflutter with whispers of a child-stealing monster lurking in the forest. Nan tells her of the Banderwigh: a dark soul who feeds on sorrow and drains the life from children’s tears.

Darkness comes calling on Emma’s happy home, threatening the reality to which she desperately clings. The impossible becomes more and more real, forcing Emma to reach inside herself for the ability to believe. Her family depends on it.

review

I had requested this one on Netgalley, I thought it sounded so cute and fairytale like. And I was happy when I got notice that they accepted my request. since I’m from the Netherlands it seems I’m excluded from lots of books.

Any way, when I started reading this book I saw I was right. It really was like a fairy tale, a dark one at that. Which is right up my alley! I can’t say that it immediately drew me in, I had to get used to the writing style first. If you think about it, it’s only natural  because it is a children’s book. But once I got into the rhythm of it I finished it in no time.

Emma, who sounds much older and wiser than her age, is so adorable and brave. Reading from her POV I kind of feel like a bum. I mean she does so much, she’s like a mini mom at times. I tip my hat to you, little lady.

Her view is very practical in the beginning, it’s kind of like “I can see, I can touch then it’s real”. But along the way that changes, as she encounters a being that terrifies many. A being that she believed was nothing but a scary story.

What happens next is a dark, magical ride in which Emma rediscovers herself. Discovers that not all can be trusted and others despite their nature can. Her beliefs are torn apart and then mended together even more strongly.

This book is a very mature children’s read, at least that’s what it feels like to me. That is why I’m convinced that not only children will enjoy it, heck I haven’t been a child for a long time and I liked it.

Afterwards I even went looking for mentions of a sequel. Why? Well, I think Emma still has a lot of work cut out for her….plus I want to know if certain promises are uphold…

I’m going to give it 4 couples….what can I say, I’m a sucker for a well written fairy tale…

Review: Deciding Fate by Tamra Lassiter

synopsis

Fate isn’t a decision that we get to make.

Hunter Simms has overcome many hardships to get to where he is. He lost his parents as a teen and stepped up to take responsibility of raising his younger brother and sister. Hunter’s overcome every obstacle in his life except for one—Kate Richardson. Hunter’s loved Kate since the second grade, but one poor choice made years ago, has made him the person that she hates the most.

Kate decided years ago that Hunter has no place in her life. A desperate call for help from her brother threatens to change Kate’s life forever. Can Kate trust Hunter to help, and will she trust fate to decide her future?

review

Kate’s brother, Brady, calls her in a rush, urging her to meet him at their family’s cabin as soon as possible. Kate hears he’s clearly in distress, so she hurries to meet him. When she arrives however it’s not her brother who she stumbles on.

A man named Hunter receives a same sort call only he misses the tone of Brady’s voice. He arrives early at the cabin and he too does not meet the person he is expecting.

And off you go to read what happens yourself 😛

Deciding Fate is more than meets the eye, when I scanned through the blurb I thought I was going to be reading a “second chance romance” but it’s much more than that. It’s got a bit of mystery and suspense going on as well, which surprised me. It was a pleasant surprise,  I’m glad that the story wasn’t all about two people reconnecting. That little bit sets it apart from other books in this genre. Not to mention the maturity of the characters, the way they handle what happened between them in the past. Made it an enjoyable to read.

I’m going to give it 3.5 couples

“Operation Hook-Up; You Book Em, We Hook Em”

review

I quite like this read, it’s short and tempting, leaving you wanting for more. I mean that literally.

Don’t get me wrong, for a short read it has done a good job with the characters and their background. It’s to the point, so you know just enough where they’re coming from with their emotions. Another thing I like is that the characters acknowledge that the thing they have is new and make no promises for a rose-colored future.

While I was enjoying their hookup story, I missed the confrontation. I don’t always like drama but I feel like it could have been a nice addition to it, giving the story a bit more edge and excitement.

But overall it is a nice short read, one giving some warmth to the cold winter days 😉 That is if you’re like me and are just reading it now…

reviewFormer housewife gone badass photographer. Too bad she’s working for a boss who doesn’t always make the best decisions…..

The title alone had me wanting to read this one, come on who doesn’t like cupcakes! I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It is much different from her other books, I mean that in a good way. The characters are much more mature in my opinion and the story seems to grows more intriguing the further you go in to it. Another thing I love is the humor, though the book has a lot of fun and giggles it isn’t too much. Making the more serious events that happen believable. Other authors have tried this very combo and when it got serious I felt the situation was still being treated as it was all one big joke and I didn’t get that here.

The last thing I want to say is about the (fake) twists thrown in the mix. The twists are ones that keeps it exiting and holy cupcake, hottie alert….no, I’m not talking about the cheating douche, pfft.

I won’t reveal too much about him but he’s all alpha, with a delicous gooey center. And I want one like him for myself.  I promise I won’t even look at the cupcakes.

Seriously, I really liked this book, it was fun, it was exiting and sometimes really sad. Also important to mention is that I’m actually seeing a growth in the stories and in the writing of this author. Not that I’m an expert or anything…It just shows….

Anyway thank you Ms. Lopez for writing this story, I love what you did with these characters and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. But I already know that you’ll somehow manage to surprise me again.

review

“you are in control”

Vanessa is so focused on work that she barely has any time left for herself, let alone a lover. It comes at no surprise that her sex life is pretty much nonexistent at this point. Her friend Ella finally puts her foot down and dares her to put herself first for a change and have some fun…preferably with some random dark, tall and handsome.

She finds Mr. dark, tall and handsome alright and his name is Enrique. He’s respectful, giving and so very hot and possessive.  He’s Vanessa’s perfect match, even if she doesn’t know it yet.  How can she know when he’s keeping a part of him secret.

An Inconvenient Dare is a rather short read but so very sexy. It’s different from her other books and that lies solely on the heat level. Her previous books have heat too but she turned it up a notch here.

In a short amount of time, Bethany Lopez gives you humor, steam, love and a little bit of drama. I hope we’ll see more steamy reads like this from her in the future.

lildollbooksmany

review

“You haven’t asked why.”

Bride Genevieve gets a case of cold feet at the very last minute. She’s panicking and with her gut telling her to run, she does just that. Ditching her poor groom at the altar.

“Don’t need to.”

“Don’t you want to know?”

Her best friend, Wolfe, sees her less than graceful attempt and wastes no time to aid her in her escape plan. But what started out as just a quest to help Gen en maybe revive their friendship, turned into something much deeper. Something neither of them are really ready for.

“Hell, yes. You’re my best friend and I had no idea you were struggling. But you’re not ready. When you want to talk, I’ll be here.”

Just like with the rest of the series I really enjoyed myself while reading this book. It’s funny and romantic without losing that serious and emotional edge. And the characters are so relatable. I do have to say that while you can read it as a standalone, you’re going to be lost character wise if you haven’t read the previous books. As a lot of characters from the previous books make a reappearance.

Gen is the good girl with such a bubbly personality and she always follows up on the decisions she makes. Even when the odds aren’t in her favor or when things aren’t going as she has expected. I can’t believe how much her fiancee attempted to change her, good thing she decides to choose herself. But at the same time she’s doubting herself, for what she considers, taking the coward’s way out. That’s just not in her nature.

It doesn’t help that everyone thinks David is the perfect fiancee. He’s loved by almost everyone. Almost. Wolfe knows something is off about him, but can’t put his finger on it. But he does see the man who alienated his friend from him. A man who installed such fear into her that she decides to run. That is enough for Wolfe to dislike David.

Such protectiveness. If that doesn’t make you fall head over heels for Wolfe, maybe his charm and personality will (trust me, he’s nothing like David). Not to forget the tats and piercings. Wolfe has been through so much, and yet he’s still standing. Better yet, he completely turned his life around.

I just enjoyed reading about these two so much. The way they interact with each other, have fun and know when to say the right thing to get the other out of their funk. And finally I found a male character who fears spiders just as much as I do. Ugh, Wolfe, I feel your troubles dude.

The only thing that feels unfinished is the whole situation with David…and the ones who are starstruck on him. How will they treat Gen from now on and is David truly out of the picture…I have my doubts…

Anyway I’m more excited about the upcoming book in the series than to be stuck on David. Arilyn’s story is next. I read the sneak peak at the end and I can’t wait! I want to know the release date.

review

Let’s see if I can tell you enough about this book without giving away…anything…First of all yes it is a serial but all the parts are combined in this book, so you don’t have to be worried about waiting for more parts or gathering all the parts separately.

I think the concept of this serial is original as is its characters. Plus it reads rather quickly once you get into the story.  But the main characters’s feelings are confusing, switching from hot to cold in a blink of an eye all through the book. Combining that with the lies and betrayals, I just would have gone crazy living in that world. Then again that’s what the stories, myths and legends about the Gods are all about.

Even though this book is categorized as New Adult I have to warn you about the rather explicit nature of the story and characters and the multiple partners aspect. If you’re not into that then this serial is not for you, otherwise have at it….if you want to of course.
